CRA Gets Ready for a Demanding Tax Season

·

With the plethora of government benefit programs rolled out to assist with the financial impact of COVID-19, the thousands of people laid off because of the pandemic, the businesses that closed (then reopened, then closed again, then reopened…), and the many people that started or ramped up side gigs to make ends meet, this year’s tax season is going to be very complicated – and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) knows it.

A recent press release from CRA announced, “Over the past year, Canadians have faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and many have had to adapt to changes at work and at home. The Government of Canada understands how difficult this situation continues to be and is taking measures to support Canadians through it.”

The press release included a statement from The Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, M.P., Minister of National Revenue, “Our government will continue to support Canadians through the current public health crisis. With the CRA’s commitment to putting people first, they will ensure that Canadians are treated fairly and with respect this filing season. The CRA understands that, due to COVID-19, individuals might find it stressful to do their taxes. However, filing on time will ensure you keep receiving critical benefits and credits, such as the Canada Child Benefit, the Climate Action Incentive, or GST credit payments.”

Changes at CRA for This Year’s Season

CRA has:

  • Added more call center agents
  • Extended call center hours
  • Implemented a targeted, flexible interest relief program for those that received support benefits
  • Added more payment arrangements for those owing taxes
  • Made home office deductions easier to claim
  • Promoted and incentivized the Community Volunteer Income Tax and Income Tax Assistance programs
  • Opened liaison support via phone or online chats for small business owners

Call times at CRA are very long at the best of times, and are sure to be longer during the coming months. Ensure you are set up with My Account and My Business Account so you can submit and track documents, and update your details online.
